Raja Ampat

The Indonesian archipelago of Raja Ampat (” four kings “) is located near the northwest coast of the New Guinea. It is constituted by about 1 500 islands, often mountainous, the biggest of which are Waigeo, Batanta, Salawati and Misool. The total surface of the archipelago is about 46 000 km2.

From part its situation in the Coral Triangle, world heart of the coral biodiversity, we count approximately 75 % of species grouped together to Raja Ampat. It’s one of the Top 10 worldwide diving spot, due to the wealth of the marine life.

Not less than 1,400 species of tropical fishes, 57 species of mantis shrimps, 13 species of marine mammals, 5 species of endangered marine turtles, 600 species of hard corals. A program of conservation established between the local institutions and the organizations as the WWF, TNC (The Nature Conservancy) favor the protection of this natural jewel.

There are a multitude of dive sites, all having a peculiarity. Dominance of soft corals and sea fans or hard corals, seagrass bed, mangrove, shallow reef, drop offs, caves, muck dive on black sand, wreck … The dives on the the North part (Mansuar, Fam, Kri, Waigeo, Wai) are more outstanding for the schools of fish and the underwater landscapes, while those of the part (Misool) are more plentiful in soft corals as well as in macro fauna. The currents are often strong and the dives are drifts, making Raja Ampat not advisable to the absolute beginners.
